Charting
Moving average crossovers in NinjaTrader.
NinjaTrader Desktop ships with moving average indicators, so charting a crossover takes a couple of minutes. This is the general picture; the step-by-step is linked below.
The general steps
Menu wording can differ between NinjaTrader 8 releases, so treat this as the outline and rely on a current walkthrough for exact clicks.
- Open a chart of the instrument and timeframe you want, with enough history loaded for the longest average you plan to use. A 200-period average needs at least 200 bars of data before it can plot.
- Open the Indicators window. Right-click the chart and choose Indicators, or use the indicators button on the chart toolbar.
- Add the first average. Pick SMA or EMA from the list, set the Period (for example 21 for the slow line), and choose a colour and line width you can distinguish at a glance.
- Add the second average. Add the same type again with the other period (for example 9), and give it a clearly different colour. Using the same type keeps the comparison clean.
- Read the chart. A crossover is where the two plots swap places. Many traders colour the fast line warm and the slow line cool so the swap is obvious.
Calculate: on bar close or on each tick
An indicator can update every tick or only when a bar closes. On every tick, a crossover can appear mid-bar and vanish before the bar finishes. Looking at closed bars gives cleaner, though slightly later, signals. Check each indicator's Calculate setting so it matches the rule you are following.
Alerts and automation
You do not have to watch the screen for a cross. NinjaTrader supports condition-based alerts, for example through the Market Analyzer, and the platform's strategy tools can express rules such as one average crossing above another. NinjaTrader also includes sample strategies for learning how strategies are structured; these are educational examples, not recommendations. Before running any automated rule, test it on a simulator and read how to backtest it honestly.
Choosing what to plot
Before picking numbers, decide the timeframe you want to trade, and read about SMA versus EMA, the common EMA pairs and the best settings question. For long-term context, the 50/200 golden cross uses the same two-indicator setup on a daily chart.
Where to get step-by-step help and tools
NinjaTrader Guru is a free guide site with step-by-step help for setting up and using NinjaTrader Desktop, and is the best place to start for exact menus and screenshots.
Affordable Indicators builds indicators, a trade copier and prop firm tools for NinjaTrader 8, and the software listing shows what is available. The sister site indicators.ninja collects indicator ideas. The Trade With Excellence Discord is a place to ask other traders questions.
NinjaTrader is a trademark of NinjaTrader Group, LLC. This site is independent of NinjaTrader. Trading futures involves substantial risk of loss, so practise on a simulator before using real money.
Frequently asked questions
Does NinjaTrader have built-in moving averages?
Yes. NinjaTrader Desktop includes indicators such as the simple moving average (SMA) and exponential moving average (EMA), plus others like the weighted moving average, and you can add several to the same chart with different periods and colours.
Can NinjaTrader alert me when two moving averages cross?
Alerts based on conditions are available through the platform, for example in the Market Analyzer, and strategies can be built or coded around a cross. Menus differ between versions, so follow a current step-by-step guide such as the ones on NinjaTrader Guru.
Why does my crossover signal change before the bar closes?
If an indicator calculates on every tick, the lines move while the bar is forming, so a cross can appear and then disappear. Check the indicator's Calculate setting and decide whether you want to act on closed bars only.
Do I need a paid indicator to see a crossover?
No. Two built-in moving averages on one chart show it. Add-on tools mostly save time, add alerts or combine the crossover with filters.
